Mayor of Georgetown, Alfred Mentore, in his New Year’s message reminded the City’s municipality of the past year’s challenges but expressed optimism for new opportunities to resolve some of the city’s age-old problems including road congestion, vending, and indiscriminate parking.

For Mentore, 2023’s major highlight was the democratic process which brought a new team of mayor, deputy mayor and councillors along with fresh perspectives and ideas into the governance structure of the capital city. But Mentore acknowledged that in 2023 the council faced numerous challenges: from infrastructure issues to economic setbacks. Nonetheless, his council members and staff worked tirelessly to address these issues and find sustainable solutions.

“We collaborated with various stakeholders, engaged in constructive dialogues with experts, and prioritized the needs of our citizens. In addition to overcoming challenges, we have made significant progress in various areas. Our city witnessed advancements despite attempts made in some sections to stymie our collective progress. Furthermore, we commenced discussions with local and international organisations to bolster our efforts to make our City Council viable and to carry out our statutory remit,” Mentore said.

The Mayor added that the city fathers and mothers intend to implement innovative solutions in 2024 to address road congestion, street vending, indiscriminate parking and the city’s contribution to reducing its carbon footprint. Another area where significant attention will be dedicated in the New Year will be environmental sustainability. Recognizing the importance of preserving the City’s

natural resources for future generations, it is the intention of the council to implement policies to promote green practices and reduce waste, encourage recycling, invest in renewable energy sources, and collaborate with environmental organizations to protect city’s citizens.

“As we enter the New Year, we are committed to building upon our achievements and addressing the remaining challenges,” Mentore said.

According to the mayor, the municipality’s focus will be on further improving infrastructure, promoting economic growth, fostering community engagement, and ensuring the well-being of every citizen. The municipality, he said, will continue to work together as a team, leveraging its collective expertise and striving for excellence in all that they do. It is in this regard, Mentore expressed his gratitude to the citizens of Georgetown for their trust and support and confidence throughout the past year.

“Your active participation and valuable feedback have been instrumental in shaping our policies and initiatives. Together, let us embrace the opportunities that lie ahead and build a prosperous and inclusive city for all. Wishing you all a happy and successful new year!” the mayor said.
