Bartica police probing miner’s stabbing death

A 58-year-old miner of Barima River, North West District was murdered after he was involved in a heated argument while imbibing with the suspect at Arimu Backdam, Cuyuni River, Region Seven.

According to the police, 58-year-old Jimmy Edward Ashby, a miner of Barima River, North West District, was murdered, reportedly by a suspect known as ‘One Hand Lloyde’, between January 2 and 3. 

The police said that a 69-year-old businessman of Four Miles Housing Scheme, Bartica, who is familiar with Ashby and the suspect, told them that the men visit his shop on a regular basis. At about 12:00 hrs on January 2, the man was at the back of his shop cooking when Ashby and the suspect who were at his shop imbibing, got into a heated argument.

The businessman told the police that when he ventured to the front of the shop to enquire about what had happened, Ashby told him that the suspect had stabbed him in the chest. Ashby reportedly told the businessman he was “okay” and did not want to go and seek medical attention.

On January 3, at about 06:30 hrs, while he was on his way to make a call, the businessman told the police, he saw Ashby motionless on a bench alongside Arimu Trail. As a result, he called the Bartica Police Station and made a report.

Police ranks who visited the scene, found Ashby’s body in a sitting position on a bench along the Arimu main trail. The body was clad in a red and white sweatshirt, grey vest and blue short pants. Upon closer examination, a single stab wound was seen to the centre of Ashby’s chest.  The body was transported to the Bartica Regional Hospital.
