Lennin Messaiah, 36, of Lot 3667, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday to answer to the charge of attempted murder.

It is alleged that on July 6, 2023, on Austin Street, Georgetown, Messaiah, in the company of another, discharged a loaded firearm at Abdul Safraz Khan. He was not required to plead.

Messaiah’s attorney informed the court that his client denied the allegation and said that his client was in the interior when the incident occurred. He told the court that his client was beaten by the police and had to be taken to the hospital for a medical certificate. He also informed the Magistrate that his client was never positively identified as the person who tried to murder Khan.

The prosecution however told the court that Messaiah was less than cooperative with the police during the investigation and also that Khan is fearful for his life and fears that Messaiah will interfere with him. The prosecution further told the Magistrate that Messaiah’s wounds were self-inflicted since he was seen banging his head continuously and they also have evidence of his involvement in the matter.

Messaiah’s attorney said that there is no evidence to support the prosecution’s charge that his client will interfere with anyone and that his client did cooperate with investigators. He further informed the Magistrate that the offence is a bailable one to which the prosecution objected. Magistrate Latchman then refused Messaiah bail and the matter was adjourned to January 26, 2024 for disclosure. The Magistrate requested that the prosecution be prepared to disclose what evidence they have when the matter is called.

Messaiah is one of three persons that the police issued wanted bulletins for last week in connection with the attempted murder of Khan. The other two are Joel/Joe Sars whose last known address is Lot3667 North Ruimveldt, Georgetown and Shannon Braxton Wilson whose last known address is Lot 2570 Kaikan Street, North Ruimveldt.
