WCB motorcyclist dies after struck by overtaking car

A West Coast Berbice (WCB) motorcyclist died on Monday night after he was struck by a car which was attempting to overtake a motor lorry in the opposite lane on the Number 9 Public Road, WCB.

Dead is Ricardo Bipta, 25, of Lot 16 Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice.

Stabroek News was told, that the accident happened just around 10.30 pm on Monday and involved Bipta who was riding motorcycle CJ 2618, motor car PLL 6437 which was being driven by Rovin Isrie, 42, of Lot 65 A Woodley Park Village, West Coast Berbice and motor lorry GSS 9769 which was being driven by Nizam Rahman, 46, of Line Path, Corriverton.

According to information gathered, the lorry was proceeding east along the northern side of the road when the motor car which was proceeding in the said direction behind the lorry was in the process of overtaking the lorry and ended up in the southern drive lane in the path of Bipta who was proceeding west along the southern side of the road.

As a result of that collision, Bipta ended up in a further collision with the lorry. The motorcyclist suffered injuries and fell onto the road.

Bipta was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body is presently at Anthony’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, police said yesterday that both drivers were arrested and taken to the Fort Wellington Police Station where they were placed in custody. The vehicles were lodged at the station. Breathalyzer tests were conducted on both drivers and they showed no sign of alcohol.

Checks were made in the area for CCTV footage but none was found.
