Region Five collision leaves pedestrian dead

A Region Five, West Coast Berbice accident yesterday afternoon involving two motor cars has left a pedestrian dead and a parked lorry with damage.

Dead is Dale Douglas, 59, of Number 28 Village, West Coast Berbice.

The 2.30 pm accident along the Number 29 Village Public Road, West Coast Berbice involved Beesham Sukha, 42, of Lot 2 F Public Road La Union, West Coast Demerara who was driving motor car PAD 9006, motor car PJJ 8599 which was being driven by Carlton George, 55, of Lot 19 Number 3 Village, West Coast Berbice, motor lorry GMM 5634 and pedestrian, Douglas.

According to a police report, the initial investigation revealed that Sukha was proceeding east along the northern side of the road while George was also proceeding in the said direction behind Sukha allegedly at a fast rate.

However, Sukha reportedly suddenly slowed down after he noticed a cow walking across the road resulting in George having to undertake him during which he collided with the front left side portion causing Sukha to lose control of his vehicle and end up on the southern side of the road where he then hit Douglas.

After colliding with the pedestrian, Sukha’s vehicle then struck the lorry which was parked on the same side of the road before coming to a halt.

As a result of the collision, the pedestrian fell on the grass parapet and sustained injuries to the body. He was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Fort Welling-ton Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Both drivers are currently in police custody assisting with the investigation. A breathalyzer test was conducted on each of the drivers and both returned with a reading of zero.
