In an effort to curb the flow of contraband items into the prisons, additional security measures will be implemented.

Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot alluded to recent attempts by members of the public to either throw contraband items over the prison’s fence or place them around the prison, adding that people’s movements near prison locations will be restricted and in some cases stop and search exercises will be conducted.

The Guyana Prison Service will erect signs at strategic points outside prisons to warn the public to desist from these activities, he said in a statement.

“Public safety is a key component of the prison system, and all efforts will be made to achieve such a task,” Elliot remarked.
