New Amsterdam man gets six months community service for narcotics

A New Amsterdam, Berbice man who was found to be in possession of 30 grammes of cannabis in South Ruimveldt, Georgetown was found guilty and sentenced to six months community service by Magistrate Clive Nurse yesterday.

According to the prosecution, 35 year old Ronald Remnie of Lot 3 King Street, New Amsterdam who was at Humming Bird Street, South Ruimveldt on January 26 2024, had in his possession 30 grams of cannabis. Remnie, pled guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics before Magistrate Clive Nurse at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. Remnie told the court that he was informed by police to plead guilty and he would receive a fine as a penalty.

The prosecution, who did not object to bail, requested that the Magistrate rule for community service. Magistrate Nurse acceded to the prosecution’s request and ruled that Remnie perform 6 months community service commencing today, for one day a week. Remnie was forewarned, however, that should he miss one day of his community service he will be sent to prison for 3 months.
