16 berths up for grabs as Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ looms

As kick-off nears for the iconic Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ season, teams are wasting no time filling out entry forms to participate in the Georgetown Zone qualifiers of the tournament, which is set to kick off on March 15 at the National Park tarmac.

As sixteen teams have sealed automatic qualification, other teams will be on the hunt to see who will secure a spot in the prestigious street football event.

Thirty-two of the top teams from the capital city will square off for bragging rights and the right to be called champion over eight days of high-octane action, along with lucrative prize money and trophies, with automatic berths in the National Finals also at stake.

Brand Executive for Guinness, Lee Baptiste, recently told media operatives that due to the tournament’s prolonged absence, the brand is “just as excited and anxious as the teams and fans to see the unrivalled tournament make its return to the sports calendar.”

“We are hoping that the tournament enjoys a triumphant return, is played with the same discipline, and creates a similar kind of excitement that was witnessed in previous years”, he further said.

Meanwhile, Baptiste noted that they have been planning meticulously to ensure that teams, management staff, and fans who come out to the event have a great time, a feature that is usually associated with the tournament.

With the Georgetown Zone kicking off on March 15, the other playing days are March 16, 17, 22, 23, 24, and 30, with the final set for the 31.

Defending champions Gold is Money will be aiming to secure their third consecutive title, an unprecedented feat that will go down in street-ball history if they succeed, as they will be the first team to do so.

The champions will have to fend off challenges from the usual suspects, such as Sparta Boss, Bent Street, Back Circle, Stabroek Ballers, Sophia, Team Cruel, and Alexander Village, among others, who will be aiming to topple them from the top of the food chain.

As usual, fans can look forward to exciting matches and giveaways on each night of action. Details of the tournament’s official launch will be released in the coming weeks.
