It would seem appropriate to align teachers’ salary adjustments with their ability to mitigate Covid induced learning gaps

Dear Editor,

I am writing to express my thoughts on the ongoing discussions surrounding the demands for salary increases by members of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU). As someone who holds teachers in the highest regard and fondly remembers the impact my own educators had on my life in Guyana, I believe it is crucial to address this matter with a balanced perspective. While it is undeniable that teachers deserve fair compensation for their invaluable contributions to society, I propose a nuanced approach to this issue, especially considering the challenges brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Rather than solely focusing on salary increments, I suggest tying these increases to measurable efforts aimed at reversing the academic fallout from the pandemic. The past couple of years have been particularly challenging for students worldwide, with disruptions to traditional learning environments leading to significant setbacks in academic progress. In Guyana, reports indicate that many students have lost substantial ground in essential subjects such as math and reading, with some experiencing the equivalent of more than a year’s worth of learning loss.

In light of these circumstances, it seems appropriate to align salary adjustments for teachers with their ability to address and mitigate these learning gaps effectively. By incentivizing educators to implement targeted strategies for educational recovery, we can ensure that any increases in compensation are directly tied to tangible improvements in student outcomes. Furthermore, such an approach would underscore the shared responsibility of both teachers and administrators in navigating the challenges posed by the pandemic and rebuilding the educational foundation of our youth. It would also serve as a testament to the commitment of our educators to prioritize the well-being and academic success of their students above all else.

In conclusion, while I wholeheartedly support the notion of fair wages for teachers, I believe that the current circumstances call for a more holistic approach that recognizes the critical role of educators in addressing the aftermath of the Covid-19 crisis. By linking salary increases to efforts aimed at reversing learning loss, we can ensure that our teachers are duly rewarded for their dedication and commitment to shaping the future of our nation.

Sincerely,

Keith Bernard
