Those painful and disastrous days when the elder and party were in power remain fresh in our memories

Dear Editor,

Recently, Guyana’s most scriptive “elder” has been offering his views, mostly critical of the current government.   He seems to think that we have forgotten about the painful and disastrous days that we endured, when he and his party were in power. So, since he has now become such an expert on all things social and political, we respectfully request that he shares with us his thoughts on the following:

1.   Your party promised to “feed, clothe and house” Guyana by 1976 yet your government banned many items including flour, milk, cooking oil etc., Guyana became the poorest country in the western hemisphere and people were starving. What happened?

2.  Father Bernard Darke was brutally murdered while photographing a protest when your party was in government.  How would you describe the way your government handled protests?

3.  Why do you think that public servants are dominated by members of your party, or is it just coincidence?

4.   My wife was a school teacher from 1977 to 1988, and never received an increase or a raise. The teachers just received a 6.5 % increase, have abandoned the students, and gone on strike.   You support this strike. How do you justify supporting a strike for teachers who just got a raise, when your government did not give any raises for several years?

5.   As the strike continues, do you have anything to say to the thousands of students who have no classes?

Sincerely,

Herbert Allen
