Today, Guyana joins the world in recognizing International Epilepsy Day, which is dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of epilepsy, a neurological disorder that affects millions of people worldwide.  The Epilepsy Foundation of Guyana (EFG) is partnering with healthcare professionals, advocacy groups, and individuals living with epilepsy and their families to shed light on the challenges faced by those living with this condition. To kickstart the observance of International Epilepsy Day, the EFG held its Annual Epilepsy Awareness Walk on Saturday, February 10, 2024.

In a recent press release, the EFG said that it was committed to addressing the stigma and discrimination faced by individuals with epilepsy in Guyana. The organization is working towards implementing the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 10-year (2022-2031) Intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy and other Neurological Disorders, which aims to close treatment and inclusion gaps for people with epilepsy.

Coincidentally, the EFG will be celebrating its 10th Anniversary. Over the years it has received support from various agencies and individuals and remains dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by epilepsy in Guyana. The organization pledges to continue providing important services to the epilepsy community in Guyana, including EEG services, medication distribution, medical outreaches, awareness sessions, and support groups for individuals living with epilepsy and their caregivers.

According to WHO, epilepsy is a chronic noncommunicable disease that can affect people of all ages, with around 50 million individuals worldwide living with the condition. Nearly 80% of people with epilepsy reside in low and middle-income countries where access to proper diagnosis and treatment may be limited.

International Epilepsy Day is organized by the International League Against Epilepsy and the International Bureau for Epilepsy, with the EFG being a full member. Individuals interested in supporting the EFG’s efforts can register with the organization by sending an email to epilepsyfoundationgy@gmail.com or a message via WhatsApp  to 592-645-7776.
