A woman who attempted to smuggle cannabis to a prisoner in the Lusignan Prison has been caught in the act and handed over to the Police, a release yesterday from the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) said.

Patricia Blackman of 135 King Edward Street, Albouystown, Georgetown was arrested on Monday morning after she was found with a quantity of cannabis while at the prison on the East Coast of Demerara.

Authorities found the drugs, amounting to 15 grammes, the GPS said in a release.

Prison officers discovered the hidden cannabis during a thorough search of her belongings upon arrival at the checking point of the prison location.

The marijuana was concealed inside plastic straws which had been inserted into tubes of toothpaste. This has caught the attention of the Prison Service, which is now concerned about this new smuggling method.

The woman has been detained and the police are now investigating her alleged involvement in marijuana smuggling.
