An inmate of the Lusignan Prison, on the East Coast of Demerara, was busted while trying to smuggle nearly two and a half pounds of cannabis into the facility on Thursday morning.

According to a Guyana Police Force press release, 25-year-old Shardrick King was found with the suspected narcotics at about 8.20 am at the prison.

The release said that the man, who is serving a sentence for wounding, works as an orderly in the penitentiary

It said that he was on duty when it was observed that while emptying garbage outside the prison, he went into a car and retrieved a black bulky plastic bag, which he threw over the prison fence.

The prison officers, who were alerted, then escorted King to the suspected package and searched it in his presence. The release said that the bag contained tobacco leaves, bamboo, zip lock bags, a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis and which weighed 1110.5 grammes (equivalent to 2.44 pounds).

The prisoner denied the allegation and statements were taken as the investigation continues, the police said.
