Both sides of the road outside of the Ministry of Labour were yesterday filled with protesting teachers, leading to traffic congestion. In a Facebook live video early yesterday, President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union Mark Lyte hinted at a “massive display” that will be taking place tomorrow at a yet to be disclosed location. Lyte noted that around 1000 to 1500 people are expected to be “outside” as teachers from outlying regions will be traveling to Georgetown to join the protests. The initial 10-day industrial action will now continue indefinitely due to the recent move by the government to cut the salaries of striking teachers instead of meeting with them at the bargaining table. “I am calling on the powers that be… Meet with the teachers’ elected representatives because this strike will not end,” Lyte said.
