Scores of teachers yesterday joined hands in the ongoing strike in Region Two just next to the Region’s flag raising ceremony for the Republic anniversary.

During the programme teachers were heard chanting “bullisim is a sin”, “teachers need respect”, “pay us better”, “we deserve better” among others phases.

The teachers stood with their placards as hundreds of persons who attended the flag-raising ceremony near the high bridge looked on. This is the third week the teachers have been on strike. They were all dressed for school but stayed away.

Teacher and member of the Guyana Teachers’ Union Martin Samaroo said the strike is all about bread and butter. He said that teachers  continue to suffer financially.

“Today the teachers showed their braveness, they came out to support, we are all here for a cause and that cause is to survive”, Samaroo said.

Teachers came from as far as Pomeroon, Capoey, Tapakuma and Lima Sands. The teachers said their struggles are real and they demanded collective bargaining.  Many of them said that they continue to seek other forms of income just to survive. Many of them are working extra hours in bars in Region Two just to make ends meet.

“We can’t do better, we don’t have a choice, we want our voices be heard, we want a better salary, so we can be happy” teachers said.
