Opposition must pronounce on Green’s declaration

Dear Editor

Let us begin with what Mr. Hamilton Green, a founding member of the PNCR said last Friday at the Burnham Foundation. Here is Mr. Green about rigged elections – “I say we should keep rigging to save us from these devils, these bastards, these demons that we have…” These “devils, these bastards, these demons…” These are the words that have now come out of the mouth of the most senior living member of the PNCR-APNU apparatus.

Ironically, about the same time as Green’s cathartic outburst, Nigel Hughes called for truth and reconciliation in the country to facilitate a “massive overhaul.” There is your reconciliation, Sir. Hamilton Green is no ordinary man. On the contrary, he is a towering figure, having served as the General Secretary of the PNC, as a senior Cabinet Minister, Prime Minister, and Mayor of Georgetown. This man knows the PNCR and APNU like no other. And he is proud of rigging. To his credit, and unlike the denial of lesser mortals in the PNCR-APNU-AFC and even WPA, Mr. Green now publicly admits to election banditry, and he is proud of it.

I call on the intellectuals of the PNCR, WPA, APNU and their political (not civil) society comrades to pronounce on Mr. Green’s declaration that the party known for rigging should continue to do so. I also emphatically call on Stabroek News and Kaieteur News who regularly publish Mr. Green’s disquisitions to inform its readers about its editorial policy given the admission of “The Elder.” I take this opportunity to register a complaint to the diplomatic corps that Mr. Green, who has now admitted to election rigging, has castigated his political opponents (meaning the PPP) as “devils,” “demons,” and “bastards,” language constitutive of the most vituperative Othering imaginable. I call on Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Aubrey Norton, to confirm or deny Mr. Green’s admission of PNC-APNU-AFC rigging efforts. The matter is urgent.

Sincerely,

Dr. Randy Persaud
