Anns Grove commenced season six of the KFC Elite League in the perfect manner, brushing aside Fruta Conquerors by a 3-0 score-line last evening at the Guyana Football Federation National Training Centre, Providence.

The rout commenced in the minute, as Keevin Williams etched his name on the scorer’s sheet, uncorking a powerful freekick from 35 yards out in the centre of the field that sailed into the back of the net. The aforesaid proved to be the only conversion of the first half, as the East Coast Demerara outfit maintained their lead heading into the halftime interval. Courtney O’Dean then doubled his side’s advantage as he made his presence felt in the 59th minute. Racing onto a through pass from Ryan Sears, O’Dean slotted his effort from inside the penalty area into the back of the net.

A 77th-minute conversion sealed the outcome as Jaden Van Groningen etched his name on the scorer’s sheet, slotting home unchallenged inside the six-yard area after receiving a squared pass.

Calvin ‘Fluman’ Allen, head coach of Anns Grove, said during a post-match comment, “Basically, being new to the methods and different ways of playing, the guys took about 25 to 30 minutes to get into rhythm. After that, we basically dominated the game in the midfield area, and that allowed us the freedom to release the forwards into threatening positions. So the game was basically difficult for 30 minutes, but the patterns of play came into effect, and we started using the width of the field to stretch the backline, and the through passes were on from there, and that was very effective in the second half.”

Up until press time, the encounter between Western Tigers and Buxton United was underway. The tournament continues tomorrow at the same venue with another round of matches.
