Fire on Tuesday severely damaged a Craig, East Bank Demerara (EBD) house and displaced seven persons.

On February 27, 2024, at 10:26 hrs, the GFS said it was alerted to a fire at Lot 23 Craig Old Road.

The team, comprising Water Carrier #14, Land Rover #7, Ambulance #12, and their crews from the Eccles Fire Station, were immediately dispatched with the first unit arriving at the scene promptly by 10:40 hrs, a release from the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) said.

Upon arrival, responders encountered a two-storey wooden and concrete building, the property of 73-year-old Josephine Thorne, accommodating a family of seven.

Regrettably, the family of seven was displaced as a result of the fire’s impact, the GFS said.

The building suffered significant damage, with a section measuring 28.3m x 15m completely destroyed, while an additional 15m x 5m of the ground floor’s eastern side sustained slight damage.

The release said that the firefighting team swiftly mobilized resources and applied strategic firefighting techniques.

Using 7570 liters of water from available assets, including Water Carrier #14 and Light Pump #136, and subsequently operating from an open water source, one jet from each was utilized to combat the blaze.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway.
