The body of Leon Dass, a 42-year-old security guard of Lot 131 Agriculture Road, Triumph, on the East Coast of Demerara was discovered  on Thursday afternoon floating in the canal along Agriculture Road.

The body was discovered by a passerby and was seen floating downward in the eastern canal on Agriculture Road. The body at the time of the discovery was clothed in a green T-shirt, short black ripped jeans, and black and white sneakers. The police were summoned to the scene and the body was pulled out of the canal. Upon examination, no visible marks of violence were observed.

Dass’ sister, Sharon Mahatoo, of Middle Road, La Penitence in Georgetown, told Stabroek News she received a call from her sister around 1 pm at her workplace informing her that Dass had been found in a trench and was believed to have drowned. She relayed that she is waiting on the post- mortem examination, which is scheduled for tomorrow, to determine the cause of her brother’s death. She also was of the firm belief that her brother did not drown.

“I don’t believe my brother drown, when I get my brother‘s post-mortem [results] on Monday, [I’ll find out] whoever is behind this because it looks like he gets beat up and he was thrown in the trench.” She noted that what is circulating on Facebook about her brother being intoxicated and falling into the trench is not true. She admitted that her brother drank alcohol for many years but despite that, he never fell into a trench.

Mahatoo is calling on the police to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of her brother. She disclosed that her brother lived alone in one of the apartments which is owned by her mother who rents other apartments at the same address located in Triumph.

The body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
