Strike, elections imbroglio and occupation of parliamentary seat

Dear Editor

Drama continues in the land.  From the called off teachers’ strike to now another elections imbroglio, not national, but a credit union, with claims and allegations of illegalities; to the continued occupation of a seat in parliament, when such occupation ended, based on a lady’s/gentlemen’s agreement, which forged the occupation of the seat.

From my perspective, the credit union imbroglio will face the court again. It is difficult to see an amicable resolution without the intervention of the court.  The person overseeing the conduct of the elections must be able to attest whether it was conducted free and fair and hence the outcome is untainted and above suspicion.  But in the end the court will decide. Can an elections petition be filed?

The continued occupation of the seat in parliament is very unfortunate as it goes against the spirit and intention of the joinder parties’ agreement and understanding.  But nefarious and clandestine objectives were in the making, it seems.

The spirit of trust, belief and confidence have been terribly eroded by deceit, mistrust and trickery.  A once promising political career has been shredded and laid bare. These two incidents expose the fragilities and failings of those entrusted as the safe keepers of time honoured principles and practices.

Sincerely,

Shamshun Mohamed
