Overcrowded and miserable conditions in our capital city created by vendors

Dear Editor,

It is indeed a depressing and frustrating experience to move around the centre of our capital city to see the miserable conditions that have been the result of vendors crowding the pavements, and even the streets in some instances, with their dreadful shacks. Not only are they congesting the area around the Stabroek market, but they are occupying more and more by moving along the streets projecting in all directions, with some businesses objecting to their blocking of their entrances, and therefore obstructing their trade.

What is also astonishing is that the City Council and the Government are doing nothing to stop this encroachment and illegal occupation and obstruction of our roadways. I wonder how tourists to our country and capital city must feel about this hideous picture that they witness.  In my travels to many islands of the Caribbean and bigger countries, I have seen nothing near to comparable to this abomination. I hereby make a plea to the persons and institutions who can help in this matter to check the area and to curb this. Do what is necessary to curb this eyesore.

Sincerely,

Roy Paul
