Special branch officers mistakenly shot at car driven by cop

Five officers from the GPF Special Branch were earlier this week reported to have shot at a car driven by police sergeant Ronald Payne after his vehicle was mistaken for one used in a criminal act.

A source told Stabroek News that the incident occurred on 11-03-2024  at about 10.15 pm at Republic Park, East Bank Demerara.

The five ranks were said to be performing duties when they observed a car fitting the description of a suspect’s vehicle.

The driver managed to quickly reverse his vehicle as ranks discharged several rounds.

The ranks gave chase as the driver drove to the Providence Police Station. Upon arrival at the station, the driver exited the vehicle and revealed that he was Sergeant Payne.

Stabroek News contacted Regional ‘B’ commander Krishna Ramana on the matter. He stated that a release was sent to Police Public Relations officer Mark Ramotar on the matter.

Ramotar told reporters on Friday evening that he is yet to receive the information on the incident
