Executives of the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) yesterday visited Police Commissioner Clifton Hicken at his Eve Leary Office  and forged a path towards enhanced security measures within mining communities in the country.

There have been recent attacks in mining communities which have led to expressions of concern.

On March 3rd, a 50-year-old miner and a 30-year-old labourer both of Bartica, were shot and killed by two masked men during a robbery at Arimu Backdam, Cuyuni River, Region Seven.

Police are investigating the murders of Zaheer Mohammed Sheriff and Donovan  Washington. According to a police press release, the suspects were two masked men on a red ATV, who allegedly carted off 102 ounces of raw gold valued at $37 million and two licenced firearms (a .32 pistol and a 12-gauge shotgun) property of Sheriff.

A release yesterday from the police said that during the cordial meeting, several topics took centre stage ranging from mitigation strategies to bolstering partnership efforts between the GGDMA and the Guyana Police Force (GPF).

GGDMA President Ronaldo Alphonso stated the organisation’s  commitment to bridging the gap with the GPF and lauded the Force for the strides it has made in safeguarding the mining community.

Vice President Dabria Marcus emphasised the timeliness of the meeting and expressed eagerness to continue collaborating with the GPF to address security concerns effectively.

With frank exchanges and a shared commitment to progress, the meeting served as a cornerstone in fortifying the alliance between the GGDMA and the GPF, the release said.
