West Dem hospital completes first keyhole surgery – Region Three

On March 20th, 2024, a milestone was achieved at the West Demerara Regional Hospital (WDRH) with the successful completion of its first Laparoscopic Surgery, commonly known as Keyhole Surgery or Minimally Invasive Surgery.

A release yesterday from Region Three said that while this type of surgery is available at other healthcare facilities in Guyana, it marked the first time at WDRH.

The procedure was performed on a 33-year-old female diagnosed with complex gallstone disease, who underwent Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy (gall bladder removal) with a surgery of approximately 2 hours. This first patient was able to resume a normal diet and ambulate within four hours post-surgery with little discomfort, the release said.

The surgical team comprised Dr. Hassan, Dr. Ramdharry, and Dr. Hosein. The anesthesiologist was Dr. Jose along with Nurse Leticia. The nurses were Nurse Carroll and Nurse Jordan.

The release encouraged the residents of Region Three to access the facilities at the WDRH, particularly in relation to surgery.
