Guyana Peace Council joins in observing the UN’s International Day of Happiness 2024

Dear Editor,

It is with a deep sense of mixed feelings that the Guyana Peace Council (GPC) joins with the rest of the world in observing United Nation’s International Day of Happiness 2024. The General Assembly of the United Nations in its resolution 66/281 of 12 July 2012 proclaimed 20 March the International Day of Happiness, recognizing the relevance of happiness and well-being as universal goals and aspirations in the lives of human beings around the world and the importance of their recognition in public policy objectives.

It also recognized the need for a more inclusive, equitable and balanced approach to economic growth that promotes sustainable development, poverty eradication, happiness and the well-being of all peoples. Happiness is a fundamental human goal. According to the ‘2024 Happiness Report’, ‘in almost every global region . . . social interactions add to happiness, with their effects flowing through increases in social support and reductions in loneliness.’

As we observe International Day of Happiness 2024, we pay homage to the Palestinian people who, at this time, when death and destruction unleashed by Israel’s aggressive war has shattered all hopes for the enjoyment of happiness for the men, women and children of Palestine making the realization of happiness a fleeting dream only to be enjoyed in a free, democratic and prosperous Palestinian state.

Sincerely,

Clement J. Rohee
