The Ministry of Health on Wednesday  hosted a graduation ceremony for Region Ten’s first batch of Community Health Workers.

A release from the Ministry of Health said that these graduates are now expected to return to their respective communities and apply the knowledge and skills they acquired during the last six months of training.

Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony, stated that the Ministry is committed to fulfilling its promise of hiring persons upon completion of training. He added that each graduate will be hired under the Ministry within their respective area in Region 10.

Further, the Minister said that because of the reluctance of individuals from central regions in relocating permanently to remote areas, the Ministry has begun decentralising most of its training to the Region.

“In the selection of this batch of students, you would have seen that we chosen people from the riverain areas and areas that are currently underserved, because we want people to go back in their communities and serve said. For those who are along the Berbice and Demerara river here in Region10, we have added another feature and we’ve worked with you to give you that extra bit of training because of the six new telemedicine sites recently established within the Region. If an emergency arises in the remote part of either rivers, the community health worker was just trained can go to the health centre and provide care using the telemedicine system, “ he explained.
