(Trinidad Express) An elderly man who was on a visit from Canada, has been killed in his family’s home by intruders.

The body of Hilton Smith, 75, was found on a bed. His mouth had been gagged, and feet and hands tied.

The discovery was made at around 1030 p.m. Friday by someone who came to check on Smith, who was staying at a brother’s house at Black Heat Avenue, Silver Stream.

The informant said that at 9.51p.m. he looked through a window and saw Smith face down on a bed, clad only in boxers.

Police broke into the bedroom and found that Smith’s hands were tied behind his back with a bandana, cloth had been stuffed into his mouth, and there was masking tape wrapped around his mouth, hands and feet.

The upstairs part of the house had been ransacked.

Crime scene officers have kept as evidence the tape, and a cutlass.

Investigators were told that Smith was last seen alive at his home, at around 10a.m. Friday, by a nephew.

He was wearing a gold chain and pendant which could not be found after police searched the house.

Smith arrived from Canada in November 2023 and was staying at his brother’s house. He was supposed to return to his home in Montreal, Canada yesterday.
