Include political science, civics in secondary school curriculum

Dear Editor,

I am writing to advocate for the inclusion of Political Science 101 and Civics in the curriculum of secondary schools across Guyana. As the nation continues to navigate complex political and social landscapes, it has become increasingly apparent that a robust understanding of these subjects is essential for the development of informed and engaged citizens.

Political Science 101 would provide students with a foundational knowledge of the structures, processes, and ideologies that shape Guyana’s political systems. By studying topics such as democracy, governance, human rights, and global politics, students would gain insights into the mechanisms that govern their society. This understanding is crucial for fostering critical thinking skills and encouraging active participation in the democratic process.

Similarly, Civics education plays a vital role in shaping responsible citizenship. By teaching students about their rights and responsibilities as citizens, as well as the importance of civic engagement and community involvement, Civics classes can empower young people to become informed decision-makers and agents of positive change in their communities.

Furthermore, the inclusion of Political Science 101 and Civics in secondary school curricula aligns with the goals outlined in Guyana’s National Development Strategy. By equipping the youths with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the complexities of modern governance, Guyanese can help to build a more inclusive, democratic, and prosperous society.

I urge education policymakers and stakeholders to prioritize the integration of Political Science 101 and Civics into secondary school curricula. By doing so, all can ensure that future generations of Guyanese citizens are equipped with the tools they need to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of the nation.

Sincerely,

Keith Bernard
