US-based Guyanese remanded over possession of unlicensed firearm, ammo

A US-based Guyanese who was allegedly found with an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on Sunday last at a horse racing event in Berbice has been charged and remanded to prison.

Tony Danraj Mootoosammy, 46, originally of Lot 10 Bath, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara (ECD), and of New Jersey, USA, was reportedly at the entrance of the horse race meet in Port Mourant, Corentyne on Sunday when police searched him. They allegedly unearthed a black Sig Sauer P365 Pistol, with a magazine containing 10 live rounds of 9mm ammunition in the waist of his pants.

Police immediately arrested the man and launched an investigation.

On Wednesday, he appeared at the Whim Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Tuana Hardy where he was charged with the possession of a firearm without licence and the possession of ammunition without licence.

Mootoosammy pleaded not guilty to both charges and was remanded to prison.

He will return to court on April 8, for report.
