The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) is intensifying its efforts this year to focus on the educational advancement of its officers.

In this vein, a release yesterday from the GPS recently disclosed that 13 prison officers have completed a two-day training programme in personnel administration. It was facilitated by the Ministry of Home Affairs, through its personnel department, and was geared at sensitising personnel staff within the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) on the rules and regulations pertaining to personnel matters within the Public Service.

Staff Welfare officer, Grace Roberts, explained that the training seeks to bridge the gap and build a rapport amongst agencies to better understand the challenges and find solutions in accordance with the rules of the Public Service.

And Director of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, posited that by investing in the education and skills development of both officers and inmates, the prison system is adopting a visionary approach in 2024.

He added, “The strategic shift towards education and training within the GPS for both staff and inmates are indicative of a commitment to creating a rehabilitative environment that goes beyond traditional incarceration.”
