Five tournament-size chess sets were recently donated to the Houston Secondary School on the East Bank Demerara by the group Overseas Friends of Guyana Chess. The sets were presented to the school by Guyana Chess Federation director Shiv Nandalall on behalf of the organisation.

At the presentation, 2022 National Junior Chess Champion and Queens College student Ricardo Narine conducted an introductory session. He taught students how the pieces move, after naming them, and demonstrated how a game should be played. Some 200 students: 120 boys and 80 girls from Grades 7 and 8 (Forms One and Two) participated in the introductory session. Some students were really interested and are excited to keep learning and playing.

Nandalall made the following remarks to the Deputy Headmistress of the school Marietta Cox, “Learning the game is expected to allow players to become more aware of decisions they make in life and accept the consequences of those decisions. Chess emboldens everyone to avoid making decisions on impulse; but only after careful thought.”
