Increase our firefighting capacity to tackle the current destructive and polluting wildfires

Dear Editor,

Human-caused climate change coupled with the natural El Nino dry weather phenomenon and aided and abetted by people deliberately setting grass and forest fires have brought us to this current state of destructive and polluting wildfires raging across our country. Spontaneous combustion is also being blamed. Recently, in one area so far, people have had to be evacuated from their homes. Climate change won’t go away in our lifetime and El Nino is natural, so it seems that extremely dry weather with its attendant risks is here to stay. It is time that the Guyana Fire Service be equipped with firefighting airplanes and firefighting helicopters to increase our firefighting capacity to combat these threats. We are already a land of many waters. We are becoming a land of many fires.

Sincerely,

Michael Hackett
