Two Guyanese men gunned down in Suriname

Two Guyanese men  were on Tuesday night shot dead in Suriname. According to reports, the men were imbibing alcohol when they were gunned down.

The two men have been identified by the Guyana Police Force as Oswick Bazilio, called `One Foot’ and Jerimiah Smith. In 2022, Smith, who was 18 at the time and from Sophia, was held by the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit  in relation to the discovery of 40 kilos of cannabis in a motor vehicle along the Springlands Public Road. He was arrested and handed over to the Springlands police.

According to a report in the Suriname Herald newspaper, the bodies of the two were discovered, with multiple gunshot wounds, on the corner of Albrecht Dürerstraat and Rubensstraat in Paramaribo-North.

“After the shooting incident, the victims ran in different directions. One man dressed in black long pants, black sweater and black sneakers was found on the roadside, while the other man dressed in a pink and black sweater, black shorts and white sneakers was found in the gutter,” the article said.

The Suriname Herald also noted that a tow truck was called in for a grey car with bullet holes in it. Another newspaper, Star Nieuws, said that the car, a Toyota IST was transported to the local police station.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
