A Bare Root family is mourning the loss of their son after he complained of dizziness, diarrhoea and vomiting. This illness is yet to be determined.

Malachi Mosely, a 14-year-old of Bare Root, East Coast Demerara, and student of Buxton Secondary, died on Thursday afternoon at about 15.30 hours at the Dr. CC Nicolson Hospital in Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara, after experiencing bouts of diarrhoea, dizziness, and vomiting.

Mosely’s sister, Ashanti Phillip, told Stabroek News that her brother related on Monday that he was having diarrhoea, and as a result, he did not attend school. The family was not alarmed at the time. On Tuesday, the diarrhoea was accompanied by vomiting, dizziness, and pain in the abdomen. Despite being ill, Mosely assisted in doing his chores as normal but was forced to retire to bed when the symptoms intensified.

On Wednesday, Mosely told his parents that the diarrhoea had stopped and he was feeling much better, though his appearance told a different story with signs of cracked yellow lips and a gaunt face. Phillip further explained that Mosely’s appetite remained constant, as well as his interaction with others. He was instructed to drink lots of water, and he complied.

On Thursday, he mentioned that he was feeling dizzy, which was then accompanied by another bout of diarrhoea, and as a result, he retired to bed. Phillips recounted that during this time she left the home and Mosely was left with a younger sibling. At approximately 16.30 hours, he awoke to take a bath, and upon entering the bathroom with the assistance of the sibling, he explained that he was feeling dizzy. According to his sister, as he entered the bathroom before turning on the faucet, he sat on a stool. It was then his arms became rigid, he subsequently, stopped breathing, and his body became motionless.

He was rushed to the Nabaclis Dr. CC. Nicolson Hospital, where shortly after his arrival he was pronounced dead.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted on Monday.

Phillip recounted, “Like around 4:30 time he get up to bathe and he say he feeling dizzy again so he sit down on the short stool in the bathroom. He hand start get straight and stiff and then he stop breathing. I pick he up and run out and call for help, we call the ambulance but they did take long to come so we use the taxi. At Nabaclis Hospital, the doctors put he on a bed start doing he vitals and the man come out and tell we he done dead. “

A visibly distraught mother, Julieanna Mosely, told Stabroek News that she has more questions than answers since her son had only complained about diarrhoea, vomiting and dizziness. Julieanna recounted that her son spoke to her normally. He had further explained to her that it was an unpleasant feeling.

“He say he don’t like how he feeling and how he head swinging but he went back to bed and I went to work and left he with the sister. I don’t know what happen to he. I am asking myself how this happen.”

Mosely was described as willing and loving. His last words to Ashanti were, “I am not feeling that good but I alright man. What you want me help you do?” That was the question he asked before he retired to bed while his sister was doing chores.
