Cane Vincent, a 24-year-old miner of Quarrie Village, Region Nine was charged yesterday with the murder of Leonel Manuel Franco Beria, a 19-year-old Venezuelan national.

The murder occurred on April 18, 2024 at Paiyuka Falls, Puruni River.

Vincent appeared yesterday at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Teriq Mohamed where he was charged with the offence of murder.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison. The matter was adjourned to May 14, 2024.

Investigations disclosed that both Beria  and Vincent worked for Reneeta Andrews, a miner. On Thursday at about 03:20 hours the suspect was in a hammock imbibing with his co-workers and became intoxicated and later fell asleep.

It is alleged that Beria hit the suspect while he was sleeping and as a result he woke up. Vincent became angry, armed himself with a knife, went to the victim’s hammock, and dealt him four stabs to his back. Beria ran to his employer’s room, where he sought refuge and subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

A report was made to the police. Upon arrival at the scene, the deceased was found lying face down on a mattress clad in a brown 3/4 pants.  The body was examined and four stab wounds were seen to his back; two to his upper back and two to the mid-section.

The suspect was arrested.
