The Ministerial Taskforce on Trafficking in Persons, comprising representatives from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, and the Guyana Police Force, conducted a comprehensive training and sensitization outreach in Region 7 from April 26th to 29th, 2024.

Led by  Andre Ally, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the initiative aimed to educate and mobilize communities in the vicinity of Puruni Landing, Backdam, Sandhill, Itaballi, Peter’s Mines, and Karrau to recognize and report any suspected acts or signs of human trafficking.

A release yesterday from the Ministry of Home Affairs said that participants were sensitized on a range of related topics including sexual offences, labour rights and practices, immigration procedures, and conflict resolution strategies. The engagement also provided a platform for attendees to address security concerns.

“Human trafficking remains a grave concern both globally and locally, with vulnerable populations often targeted and exploited. Through this outreach effort, the Ministry of Home Affairs and its partners on the Ministerial Taskforce aim to shed light on this issue, empowering individuals to take proactive measures and provide support to victims”, the release said.
