The Golden Jaguars lost the opening fixture in their two-match international friendly series against hosts Trinidad and Tobago, going down 1-2 to the ‘Soca Warriors’ last evening at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain.

Guyana’s starting XI comprised Jamaine Cumberbatch, Daniel Wilson, Leo Lovell, Jeremy Garrett, Darron Niles, Stephon McDonald, Kelsey Benjamin, Curtez Kellman, Ryan Hackett, Quincy Adams, and Amos Ramsay.

Two first-half goals proved a bridge too far for the Guyanese, as they were unable to overturn the deficit in the second period.

Kelsey Benjamin reduced the deficit for the Guyanese in the 47th minute after Ezekiel Kesar and Kevon Woodley found the back of the net for the Soca Warriors in the 28th and 39th minutes, respectively. In the end, Benjamin’s conversion only proved to be a consolation goal.

The second match in the series, which is being utilised by both nations to examine the respective local contingents of their rosters ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, will occur at the same venue tomorrow.

Guyana will open their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign on June 6th away to Panama. They will then face off against Belize in Barbados five days later. Nicaragua and Montserrat are the other two teams in the group.
