CARICOM congratulates Guyana on Independence Anniversary

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has sent a message of congratulations to Guyana on the celebration of its 58th Anniversary of Independence, as well as its appreciation for this country’s stewardship as current Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Government.

In a release yesterday, Secretary General, Dr Carla Barnett, spoke of Guyana’s remarkable journey since attaining its independence, and its emergence as a “leading and visionary voice” on the international stage, tackling issues such as climate change, global peace and security, human rights, energy security, and inclusive development. It noted too, that Guyana has effectively “led the charge” on the critical area of regional food and nutrition security, for which it has lead responsibility in the CARICOM Quasi-Cabinet.

Dr Barnett also mentioned Guyana’s recent “able” chairmanship of the United Nations Security Council, which she posited, underscores the strength and impact of small states, such as those of CARICOM. She also expressed admiration for Guyana’s handling of the threats to its territorial integrity, by demonstrating continued commitment to the principles of peaceful resolution and respect for international law. Also acknowledged was the fact that as host country of the Secretariat, Guyana plays a vital role in strengthening regional bonds and fostering collaboration.

“The Community extends its deep gratitude for your unwavering dedication as current Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Government. As you celebrate this milestone, we extend best wishes to the Government and People of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, for a peaceful, sustainable and prosperous future,” the release added.
