Guyana’s Desmond Amsterdam suffered a unanimous decision loss in Bangkok, Thailand, yesterday when the second and final Olympic boxing qualifying tournament continued.

Fighting in the 80kg weight class, Amsterdam, who to his credit fought valiantly, was outclassed by his Dominican Republic opponent, Cristian Pinales, across five rounds.

The bout, which was judged by Brendan McGarrigle (Ireland), Johany Maden (France), Fardad Sadegh Poor (Iran), Muhamad Arisa (Indonesia), and Alisher Palvanov (Uzbekistan), had all five scores in favour of Pinales, handing him the unanimous decision.

McGarrigle, Maden, Sadegh Poor, and Arisa all had Pinales winning at 30-27, while Palvanov had him winning at 30-26.

While Keevin Allicock won via a third-round RSC (Referee Stopped Contest) on Friday, Guyana’s two other pugilists, Joel Williamson and Emmanuel Pompey, are still to fight in the preliminary rounds of the 63.5kg and 92kg categories, respectively.

Williamson will jump into action today, while Pompey is set to do battle tomorrow.

Allicock, who booked progression to the round of 32, will fight Batuhan Ciftci of Turkey on Tuesday. Allicock is the only member of the group who has attended a previous Olympics, having fought at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
