Teachers plan strike

With government rejecting the majority of salary and non-salary measures in a multi-year agreement proposed by the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), the new school year could begin with a strike by teachers.

Ministry breached procurement law in award of harbour bridge consultancy

The Ministry of Public Infrastructure (MPI) breached the Procurement Act in awarding a contract in December 2016 to Dutch firm LievenseCSO for consultancy services for the feasibility study and design for the new Demerara River Bridge, a Public Procurement Commission (PPC) investigation has found.

Granger seeking ‘unbribable’ Top Cop

Stressing the need for the restoration of public trust and the reform of the Guyana Police Force, President David Granger yesterday said that his choice for substantive police commissioner would be someone who is “unbribable” and can steer the organisation in the right direction.

[Video] Teachers to strike after failed talks with govt

After a disastrous three-hour meeting today with government representatives, the executive of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) has been directed by its members to inform the Department of Labour that teachers will be proceeding on strike action beginning in the pre-term period and continuing into at least the first week of the new school year.

Growth rate upped

Finance Minister Winston Jordan yesterday presented the 2018 mid-year review to Parliament and upped the projected growth rate to 3.7% for the year but the key sectors of sugar, gold and rice were down and there were also unsettling figures on balance of payments and foreign reserves.

AFC says ready to prove itself at LGE

The Alliance for Change (AFC) yesterday dismissed suggestions that its  40 percent  seat allocation proposal to its governing coalition partner for  the upcoming Local Government Elections (LGE) was too high and said that it is ready to prove itself.

Gunman robs Rubis station at Bel Air

A lone gunman on Tuesday evening invaded the Rubis service station located at Bel Air, Georgetown where he held a cashier at gunpoint before carting off an undisclosed amount of cash and phone cards.
