Guyana is not rushing to access the remainder of the US$880M that the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) says it can borrow to execute projects but will seek to determine which of many plans before it are vital and can give the best returns, Minister of Finance Winston Jordan says.

Consular trip to Venezuela postponed

The unavailability of flights to Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela has forced government to postpone a planned trip there to assess consular services for Guyanese residing there amid the economic and political turmoil wracking the country.

Fisherman murdered at Kumaka waterfront

The Police today said that they are investigating the murder of Elroy Marks, 43, a fisherman of Aruka River, North West District and also of Dartmouth, Essequibo Coast which occurred about 3.30 pm yesterday at Kumaka Waterfront, North West District; allegedly by a 43-year old labourer of Hotoquai Village, North West District who has since been detained and is assisting with the investigation.

Jordan distances tender board from sole-sourcing of $367M in drugs

With questions raised over the sole-sourcing of almost $367 million in emergency drugs from a US-based company last year, Finance Minister Winston Jordan has distanced the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) from bearing responsibility for the deal, while saying that it’s approval is usually determined by the case put forward by the procuring entity. 

CANU nets almost 325 lbs of cocaine, ganja in Mon Repos bust

A couple from Good Hope, East Coast Demerara were arrested yesterday morning and several others, including Venezuelan nationals, are being sought following the discovery of almost 325 pounds in total of cocaine and marijuana, which were unearthed in a wooden vessel at Mon Repos.

Toshaos for training at annual conference

The annual conference of the National Toshaos Council (NTC), which gets underway tomorrow, can expect “very sober discussions” on issues affecting indigenous communities as well as training for newly-elected leaders to empower them to represent their causes, according to outgoing NTC Vice-Chairman Lenox Shuman.
