…Berbice businesses see sales drop over VAT

A number of businesses across Region Six (East Berbice/ Corentyne) are experiencing a downturn in sales following the introduction of the controversial Value Added Tax (VAT) on January 1 with consumers complaining that prices of certain commodities have skyrocketed way above their earning power.

Sattaur disturbed by Berbice VAT problems

Describing some of what he had seen as disturbing, Commissioner General of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) Khurshid Sattaur on Tuesday slammed businesses in Berbice that are charging VAT on zero-rated items and he acknowledged that people in the region did not seem to understand the tax.

School gang peddling marijuana

Police were summoned on Tuesday to a city school after one of the students was found with a quantity of marijuana and it was later discovered that a gang was operating from the school peddling not only drugs but also stolen items.
