Letters to the Editor

There was lack of a political will to tackle corruption

Dear Editor, Despite what former Prime Minister Samuel Hinds wrote about the absence of corruption in agencies which fell under his former portfolio, and which was published in your March 31 edition, the economic hardship, institutional weaknesses, criminal justice inefficiencies as well as ethnic fractures in this country did provide fertile ground for corruption during the last administration.

Warne should have shown more sympathy to Samuels

Dear Editor, I looked at a replay of the March 31 World Cup semi-final between India and the West Indies (which the West Indies won by scoring 146 runs in boundaries and sixes as opposed to 92 by India) in a less anxious frame of mind than watching it live, and noticed Shane Warne broadcasting while Samuels was at the wicket.

Is the matter closed?

Dear Editor, I am fully aware that the law often works in mysterious ways, and that justice is only occasionally one of the wonders it performs.

Samuel Wright was the best choice in Linden

Dear Editor, Though somewhat disappointed I’m not in the least surprised that Mr Samuel Wright, leader of the Linden 2025 team at the just concluded local government elections was not even accorded a fleeting chance of being considered for Mayor of Linden.

Certificate of Election has spelling errors

Dear Editor, The Certificate of Election issued by a Returning Officer of the Guyana Elections Commission (Gecom) in Region Six to Ms Gumattie Kumar, elected councillor of the Ordnance/Fort Lands #38 NDC in Cumberland, Canje which has been stamped and signed by the officer, contains spelling and punctuation errors (copy provided).

Government should release all the figures related to child sexual offences

Dear Editor, We the undersigned call on the Presi-dent, the Ministers of Public Security, the Sexual Violence Unit of the Ministry of Social Protection, the Attorney General & Minister of Legal Affairs, the Chancellor of the Judiciary, the Commissioner of Police, the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Director of the Childcare & Protection Agency to ensure that in addressing the huge backlog of court cases priority is given to the large number of children and adolescent survivors of sexual offences who frequently spend up to 7 years awaiting trial of the perpetrators.

Letter was mangled

Dear Editor, Thank you for publishing my letter on March 29, which you titled ‘The coalition’s reputation needs protecting in Lethem’.

‘An inconvenient truth’

Dear Editor, Gail Teixeira wants the government to remove me as Chair of the Guyana Reparations Committee because I revealed an inconvenient truth about three Amerindian nations who have already received part of the 13.8 per cent of Guyana through the Guyana government.
