Vision 2011 for sport

Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony in his speech during the budget debate in Parliament disclosed his vision 2011 for sport in Guyana.

“Vision 2011 for sports would see an improvement of sporting infrastructure in Guyana. This year we will start the first phase for the swimming pool complex,” Dr. Anthony said.

Anthony added that in the first phase a 50-metre Olympic swimming pool would be constructed that would allow swimmers to compete utilising the right facilities.

On completion of the swimming pool complex, it would have a 50- metre Olympic size pool and a 25-metre warm-up pool. Spectator seating around the pool for viewing competition will also be constructed.

Anthony said that with the completion of this sport facility, international swimming competitions would be hosted in Guyana.

Meanwhile, Anthony said that preliminary work would be done to establish multi-purpose sport facilities in the country. The facilities would augment the existing sport infrastructure and would include a synthetic athletics track and football field.

During this year a new programme called “sports for development” is to be launched with the objective of using sport to mobilize youths for educational and employment programmes.
