Investigations are continuing into the suspected murder of a Zeelugt fisherman and his reputed wife is still in custody while detectives are said to have made a breakthrough in the case.

37-year-old Seelall Jitlall was discovered dead on Tuesday at his Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo home with a stab wound to his upper chest and a bloodied knife next to him. According to reports his body was stiff when it was found suggesting that he had been dead for quite a while.

Relatives gave conflicting reports about the circumstances surrounding his demise and yesterday Stabroek News learnt that investigators had made a breakthrough in the case. Earlier, the dead man’s wife had told the police that she and Jitlall were drinking at her mother’s home when he went home to change and never returned. However, her relatives had said that he was never there that day and his mother-in-law had said that the last time she had seen him was on Monday.

A post-mortem to ascertain the cause of Jitlall’s death will be done today.
