Vehicles must be properly examined before issuing fitness certificates

Dear Editor,

You published my letter not so long ago on the horrific road accidents that are currently plaguing Guyana.

The Linden accident is just another shambles for the traffic laws. What is the point of the law being written but not enforced?

If that parked truck was properly lit and had highly visible reflective stripes that driver could have avoided it.

Vehicles are being driven on our roads and are not road worthy. The police should not be tasked with giving fitness certificates for vehicle because;

(1) They are not mechanics (2) Proper tests in a controlled environment should be carried out on critical components and parts such as; brakes, tyres, windscreen wipers, seat belts etc. for all vehicles. Currently these are all done by visual inspection of the officers without adequate equipment.

I am not knocking the officers who are doing this, I am sure that they are working to the best of their abilities but this should be done by trained professionals only.

This will free up more officers to fight crime and will ease the pressure off those officers who are so busy investigating or attending accident scenes.

Yours faithfully,

Ameer Allie
