Police ranks at Essequibo did a fine job in nabbing this gang

Dear Editor,

Several residents of Region No. 2 which stretches from Pomeroon to Supenaam join with me to commend police ranks there for having done an excellent job in apprehending an organized criminal gang in the district.

Under the astute leadership of Commander Wresford Johnson, the gang which included a 15 year-old girl was nabbed some hours after a daring robbery attack was executed on the business premises of Ganesh Persaud at Richmond Housing Scheme.

Comprehensive reports of what transpired during the incident which occurred around 6.30pm on October 10th last, and how they were captured at a 5.30a.m. road block in Suddie the next morning after escaping from the robbery scene, were carried in the press.

When the police intercepted them while travelling in two cars probably to join the earliest speed boat at Supenaam to get to their destination, a quantity of the stolen booty was recovered as well as an M16 rifle and several live rounds.

The girl belongs to Mainstay on the Essequibo Coast from where another man living there has since been arrested to face charges as well in connection with the robbery.

Diligent police work in capturing the gang was of significant importance in that they were not only charged with offences related to the crime committed here but many others in a country-wide robbery spree.

More importantly too was that without their capture they would not have appeared in court to answer any charges but to be on the run to continue their lawlessness.

For sometime now there has been an upsurge in serious criminal activities in the district which remain unsolved with much uneasiness to the society.

The gang was unable to elude the district police who deserve much praise for living up to expectations, and to keep up with their good work at all times.

Yours faithfully,

Baliram Persaud
