Water supply to properties of the Mayor and City Council, including the municipal markets, is to be disconnected for outstanding water rates, the municipality disclosed in a release yesterday, citing information conveyed to the council by a Guyana Water Inc representative.

And the council said that having regard to its indebtedness to GWI, the relevant agency within the municipality has started a process of verification to secure what it termed “the integrity of its accounts at the corporation.”

But this is taking some time, the release added.

However, the council noted that GWI owes the council in excess of $212 million. As a result, the release continued, the council had hoped that there could have been an arrangement between the corporation and the municipality after the verification. As it now stands, this appears difficult to achieve, the council acknowledged.

Meanwhile, the council said it was bringing this situation to the attention of the public because citizens have a right to know the state of affairs within the municipality. This, the release concluded, would allow them to cooperate and support the collective effort of City Hall to improve conditions in the city.
