Real estate agent, 83, dies on the spot after collision

An 83-year-old real estate agent died on the spot yesterday afternoon when a motorcar driven by a member of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) slammed into him while he was riding a bicycle along the Plaisance, East Coast Demerara Public Road.

Eustace Hall of Middle Street, Sparendaam was riding his bicycle along the said stretch of public road and was about to cross to the other side, relatives said, when a white motorcar slammed straight into him. The accident occurred sometime after 5 pm yesterday.

When this newspaper arrived at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) last evening, at approximately 6 pm, a large group of Hall’s relatives was present. Loud praying and crying could be heard for more than twenty minutes after Hall’s body arrived.

According to a hospital source, the man was pronounced dead on arrival at GPH. “His hand de break up, his foot de break up. You coulda tell that is slam that car slam into he,” one relative was heard saying.

The driver of the motorcar transported the deceased to the hospital.

However, one of Hall’s daughters said that when she attempted to speak to the soldier he walked away and refused to listen to her.

“De middle of the car bonnet was smashed in and de windscreen was broken,” one relative related. He said that another relative had accompanied the driver along with the police to the station.

Hall leaves to mourn nine children, a wife in her late 70s, many grandchildren and friends. “He was a good man, a well-known man and a strong, helping member of the church,” his daughter said repeatedly. (Sara Bharrat)
