A 21-year-old technician was placed on $300,000 bail after he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court charged with the theft of items valued at $3,093,000 from a cell phone shop.
It is alleged that between June 5 and 6, Alf Kishawn Nurse of 71 South Turkeyen broke and entered the Cell Phone Shack located at North Road and carted off a number of items including a computer, 67 cell phones, and MP3 and DVD players, among other things. Nurse pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Attorney-at-law Adrian Thompson representing Nurse told the court that his client was arrested because of 12 cell phones he had in his possession and these were given to him by someone to look after. He went to Cultronics to check if the phones were working and the operators of that store contacted the police since they were aware of the Cell Phone Shack robbery.
Police prosecutor Sherwin Mathews said that Nurse was at Cultronics to unlock the phones but he could not give the name of the person who had given the phones to him. Mathews said that if indeed he had gotten the phones from a client to look after then he should have a name and address for such an individual. He also said that the court should take into consideration the value of the articles stolen.
The magistrate placed Nurse on $300,000 bail and transferred the matter to Court Four for June 30.
The Cell Phone Shack was robbed last Thursday night after bandits reportedly ripped open the front doors of the building to gain entry. Operations Manager of the store Paul Parsaram had said that some 50 cellular phones, among them many new models, had been stolen.
